Care facility residents smoking weed instead of cigarettes

There are worse ways to spend the end of your life. Hanging out and smoking weed with some buds? Hell yeah.
Edit: thanks for the award, kind stranger.

Yea, looking at it really made me smile. They seemed relaxed, no work to wake up to tomorrow, have fun and enjoy retirement

u/McButtsButtbag 4h ago
You think people in care facilities are enjoying retirement?

I hold a "care" facility directly responsible for causing my mom to die months, if not years earlier than she would have otherwise, so believe me when I say I'm not defending them in general, but a few are genuinely good places for people who need full time care.
Edit to add so people don't get the wrong idea: I got her out the day I found out how bad it was. She had been hiding how bad she was being treated so we wouldn't worry until she couldn't stand it anymore. They actually tried barring us from leaving without signing waivers absolving them of any wrongdoing.

I returned a guy who escaped from his nursing home to buy smokes. His wheelchair battery died on the corner of the gas station. We loaded him up and he sent me in to buy his cartons of Marlboros, which he then smuggled back into the nursing home in his sweatpants. He's probably long dead by now, but Grady Grisham you were a fucking legend.

I had a patient once who was mad as hell because his sister, who had power of attorney, wouldn't give the facility permission to let her brother smoke. I struck a deal with the fella that I would buy his choice of cigarettes on my break as soon as his sister gave permission.
Two packs of Marlboro Gold 100s are the only cigarettes I've ever bought.

u/lifeintraining 1h ago
Why do they need to smuggle anything in to begin with? These are adults facing the end of their lives. Avoiding cigarettes isn’t going to cure a terminal illness, let them live how they want. Grady Grisham is balling hard in spirit, guaranteed.

I delivered groceries to a care facility last night and just found it interesting that everyone outside was smoking weed having a good time, as opposed to similar deliveries I had done to places like this in the past they would all be outside smoking cigarettes. Nice change

u/DinosaurAlive 5h ago
When my grandma was in long term care facility I’d go hang out with her while she smoked outside. Several of the residents (many different ages) would smoke weed and jam out to music. One time that one song “Because I got high” came on and they all sang it all happy. It was fun!

That was my first thought too! Someone better setup a switch or router so we can all hook up to each other, and we'll have a DC++ server running in every residence home. It'll be like being young all over again!

Is this Portland? Not just because of the weed, but because it looks exactly like where my mom used to work.
But, also because of the weed

I used to work in cancer/palliative care.
We may or may not have turned blind eye if someone brought weed for a patient, because that shit works miracles.
I remember one palliative patient was on the maximum dose of hydromorphone (the one that's stronger than morphine) and was STILL in pain, despite being so groggy she could barely open her eyes. Her sister brought in something that absolutely was NOT weed, and next minute this patient's pain is manageable enough for her to sit up and talk to her family.

Funnily enough I deliver weed to people in retirement homes! I mean not just retirement homes, but you'd be surprised how many customers we have in similar situations.
I do love when I show up to any delivery at the same time as the Uber eats or pizza delivery. It's like yeah... that's a good night.

I love fairly close to a care facility and I see this (and smell it!) often. Thankfully Florida has medical MJ. I mean it’s ridiculous it’s not fully legal but it’s also stupid easy to get a medical card.
It’s a very nice change!

There’s an episode of Poker Face where the main character takes a job at a nursing home and befriends some ex hippie types. Over a blazing session she finds out they committed some light terrorism back in the day.

This is the stage of life where people should be able to take what they please. If they're in a nursing home, a lot of those folks are palliative.

Anyone* should be allowed to take anything at any point in their lives provided they aren't harming others by doing so.

I started smoking in highschool when I was hella suicidal, literally nothing to lose. Prolly the one thing that saved me, because 1. I would go hang out with people with smoke, or if i bought. 2. Actually gave me an appetite. I went thru most of highschool 1 meal a day.
Weed is the one thing ill recommend people. I think most people could actually further themselves, if they weren't worried about the tiny nuances of life.

When my grandmothers depression was bad and her dementia was starting to set in, I smoked her out. She took a big puff (muscle memory from back in the day, I’m sure), let out an adorable giggle, and said “oh, that feels nice!
I miss her.

I used to work nights at a care facility. Smoking of any kind wasn’t allowed.
It was understood that, as long as it didn’t become my problem, I didn’t see or smell anything.

u/tippiedog 3h ago
It was understood that, as long as it didn’t become my problem, I didn’t see or smell anything.
That's what I was thinking. In most cases, weed probably makes residents more compliant and/or less likely to complain, but I imagine in some cases, it could interfere with other meds or cause other problems that I can't think of off hand. In that latter case, it becomes your problem possibly.

I see what you’re saying but look at it this way: they’re not leaving the nursing home alive. They know it, we know it. They’re usually non complaint with diet, meds and PT. They live there because of medical issues they and their families can’t handle on their own. They have very little control as it is on their day to day living.
It’s a matter of quality of life at that point. The weed helps make their end of life more tolerable.
10
u/tippiedog 3h ago
Oh, I wasn't arguing with you at all and, in fact, I agree 100% (and I speak from some experience; I've been primary caretaker for two relatives who were in nursing homes; they're awful places even in the best cases). I was just thinking about the "as long as it didn't become my problem" statement and trying to think of situations where it might actually be a problem for a resident to smoke.
3
u/instant_chai 3h ago
I know you weren’t!
Basically my meaning was, as long as they weren’t bothering the other residents, risking fire or drawing attention to themselves or me, I let it slide.
While I know rules are rules, I was also having to deal with techs not doing their job, making sure my sundowners were safe, passing meds, tube feeds, and wound cares. In the grand scheme of things, it was low on my list of concerns as long as they were smart about it. It was usually one or two that smoked anyway.

One of the funniest emails I've read from our DNS was we're not allowed to assist a resident in going outside to partake in cannabis or PROVIDE them with lighters to do so

I had a close friend whose pain management left him wanting. I told him that pot could probably take the edge off, but he was a straight-edge person his entire life. So I offered to do it with him. I didn't personally smoke. I was a heavy, problematic drinker instead, but I've done it as a teen and survived and thought WTH?
Not only did it help with the pain to some degree, it was also exciting and that's something he didn't experience much any more. On my side, I literally just stopped drinking with zero friction whatsoever. I'd tried so many times to quit, and within a couple weeks was sober, and have been for (*so long I gotta check) 11 years this October.
It doesn't work for everyone and it's not without it's own set of dangers. It needs peer reviewed testing and understanding of the mechanisms, even. But for those that it helps, it's a godsend. I'm glad to see it coming out from underground

There is an assisted living residency down the street from my house. Anytime I drive by there I see a group of residents smoking weed at various spots. Usually on the corner by the street but they have also moved across the street to the bus stop. Always give them a thumbs up.

My uncle is in a facility like this at a relatively young age and my mom feels bad for him so she does a lot for him and brought him in some weed. He then got caught smoking weed in his room and had to go in for a meeting with management and it made me laugh like she’s going In to meet with the principal because her delinquent teen is smoking weed

u/Sensitive_Quarter375 5h ago

u/Iitaps_Missiciv 5h ago
My delivery instructions were to leave at the front door, one of the residents said "she better hurry up, there's about to be a lot of hungry people out here" while lighting a fresh J (implying they were jokingly going to get munchies and eat food)

I worked as a cook in a care facility until 2024. I was noticing the generational change from WW2 gen to boomers. Suddenly the food requests changed to more hippy etc. I bet the smoking is related.

Totally understand this, my brothers friends mum was diagnosed with a extreme case of cancer, she got to a state that she would rather pee in the bed than try to get up and move, the only solace she had was she was given weed that she kept just under her top lip and keeping the pain at bay.

I used to sell to a few patients at a facility. My sister was a nurse there and had some friends who were clients. One guy she had to light it for. But smoking was allowed in that building as it was apartments and almost 20 years ago.

I’m 74 retired construction, at the end of a good day,(a day where I don’t hurt myself doing chores) I like to hit one up and enjoy my accomplishments of not being dead yet. I live in Michigan where weed is actually really good. I’m part of that generation that could have been arrested for a gram or two. Feels good knowing you can just relax in your own setting and feel worry free. God bless those people. They are doing everything right

ive worked with nursing homes and most of them will let you smoke weed assuming 1. they allow smoking on the premises and 2. you have a medical prescription or need for it. pot heads do show up at nursing homes too, the only time theres a problem is when the resident tries to smoke inside their rooms, which also happens, someone had to be kicked out of one i know because she kept sparking up in her room when she was like 2 doors down from someone on oxygen, not very safe. nursing homes will usually not let residents have their own lighters, usually the nurse staff will hold them and light them for the residents. that was my job at one point, spending 15 minutes outside with the smokers lighting their cigarettes
3
u/Ill_Clue1068 3h ago
TIME TO LEGALIZE! This is insanity. Would any citizen of America consider these senior citizens criminals? And if you would get fucked.
3
u/Clowndick 3h ago
I work in assisted living. Since we didn't have a cannabis policy when weed became legal and State Dept of Health doesn't have a reg against it, our residents are allowed to toke up 420 blaze it

u/PobBrobert 3h ago
As a former cigarette smoker, I genuinely miss the community and camaraderie that came along with smoking.
One of the dorm buildings at my school had a bench in an alcove where everyone went to smoke, and we called it Cancer Corner. There was almost always at least one person out there between the hours of 7 am and 2 am. I met a lot of cool people and had a lot of laughs rippin’ darts out there.

Glad to hear it! Tincture THC for those who don’t smoke it. This makes happy. Cannabis is medicine never left anyone tell you otherwise.

I am a wheelchair user, and people frequently take photos of me without my consent. Many other disabled friends of mine experience the same invasion of privacy. Which is to say - next time you are about to take a creepshot of disabled people, I suggest you think twice.

When weed was legalized in Canada, the only demographic that saw an increase in consumption was the 55+ crowd.
Power to them, no harm and some pain relief. Social gatherings outside are a bonus.

Every supplier I’ve ever had always has a bunch of older/elderly customers. It’s a huge green flag for me and has never failed as a litmus test.
It was kinda crazy waiting for one of my old guys, seeing all these boomers standing around and starting to panic (I am not exactly inconspicuous and the meet point was a corner shop so always people around) only for him to pull up and every single one was a customer lmao. My current guy sells to some pensioners that live in my village and has basically become my homie.
While I would never encourage anyone to take up any kind of substance abuse I have to say cannabis has been the best in terms of socialising and making friends. I’m not really a “stoner” anymore (mostly smoke a j before bed bc I’ve had chronic insomnia since infancy) but I have maintained so many friendships with people that started because of just smoking together. Many of them no longer smoke at all.
